The Mattress Protector

A very nice, substantial mattress pad that I'm using atop a thin, spill-proof cover that accompanied my mattress (and is required under the mattress warranty). I wanted the extra padding, and I also wanted the comforting softness of good, old-fashioned cotton as a backing to my cotton sheets. The mattress pad I used prior to this was synthetic. I “inherited” it when we sold the family beach house. It was a high-quality product, plump to the point of firmness, and it served me well, but now that I’m older and achier, I wanted to replicate the softness I recalled from the all-cotton pads of my 1960s childhood. Happy days! Still, I'd forgotten just HOW good the real cotton pads feel... and how good they smell! That was a nice surprise. My synthetic pad never smelled bad -- I washed it weekly with Tide Unscented and a splash of distilled vinegar; it was very clean. But, there was a detectable difference in the inherent scent of the two. Maybe it’s the cotton pad’s LACK of any synthetic / chemical smell that I’m detecting. It just smells like…air. Anyway, that’s a change I hadn’t anticipated, but that I welcome. I’m not washing the cotton pad weekly, as it feels fresher longer. Time will tell whether it holds up to repeated washings. But, so far, I’m very pleased with my purchase. I honestly feel as though I sleep better on the cotton pad than I did on its synthetic predecessor. Had I known the difference it would make to go all-cotton, I would’ve made the leap much sooner than I did.

Fits perfectly with great padding and excellent protection for the Tempur-pedic mattress it covers.
