Inside Boll & Branch's Impact Report: Fair Trade, Organic Cotton, and a Decade of Traceable Supply Chains

A Decade of Making a Difference, Not Just a Product

"We were founded in 2014, but we stand for the idea we founded ourselves on: be different and make a difference," says Founder & CEO Scott Tannen. That idea has guided every decision since, including the one Founder & Chief Product Officer Missy Tannen describes as central to the company: making "the right choice, not the easy choice." Boll & Branch was the first brand to source bedding products certified by Fair Trade USA, and a decade later, that founding choice has compounded into a body of verifiable results. The brand’s 10-Year Impact Report lays out those results in full, from wages paid on factory floors to the cotton fields where every fiber begins. Here’s what a decade of choosing the harder path actually adds up to.

The Fair Trade Difference: Over $1.6M in Premiums Paid to Workers

Fair Trade Certification is often treated as a label. At Boll & Branch, it's a direct transfer of money into workers' hands. From 2014 to 2024, the brand has paid over $1.69 million in cumulative Fair Trade premiums to the people who make its products, distributed across 7 Fair Trade USA Certified factories. Those premiums reached 22,495 workers, all earning fair wages in safe working conditions, a scale that reflects how deeply the certification is embedded in the supply chain rather than applied to a single product line. The brand crossed its first $1 million in premiums paid in December 2022, a milestone that marked years of steady, compounding impact rather than a one-time initiative.

Rooted in Responsibility: 100% Organic Cotton

Boll & Branch is the leader in prioritizing organic cotton across their product assortment, and the report puts a number on that commitment: 27,659,526 lbs of organic cotton purchased by the publishing of the report. Because the cotton is certified organic in full, it's grown without harsh chemicals, synthetic pesticides, or GMOs, at every stage from field to finished sheet. That claim is backed by GOTS certification, the leading third-party standard for organic textiles. The commitment predates the certificate, too. Boll & Branch has held supporter-level membership with Textile Exchange since 2015, a decade-long relationship with the industry body that tracks sustainable fiber sourcing at scale.

Beyond Cotton: Ethically Sourced Down and Feathers

Organic cotton isn't the only material held to a higher bar. Boll & Branch has sourced 417,000 lbs of down and feathers under the same standard of scrutiny, with 100% of that material certified and traceable to the Responsible Down Standard and the International Down Standard. The certification means every down product can be traced back to a source that meets defined animal welfare requirements, not just a general claim of ethical sourcing.

Unprecedented Transparency with Origin Track

In 2024, Boll & Branch launched Origin Track, a traceability program Scott Tannen calls a "first-of-its-kind system" for the bedding industry. It’s built to answer a question most brands can’t: where, exactly, did this product come from? Every set of sheets passes through 42 inspection points across the supply chain and is tested and inspected 18 times before it reaches a customer’s door. That level of documentation is what separates Boll & Branch’s supply chain transparency from a marketing claim, giving customers a traceable record rather than a promise to take on faith. It’s a direct answer to a broader shift in what shoppers expect to know about where their products come from.

A Supply Chain Built From Special Relationships

Behind every stated figure are the people and places that make it possible. Boll & Branch protects the identities of its partner facilities as trade secrets, per the terms of the Impact Report, but the relationships behind those factories speak for themselves in their longevity. The organic cotton mill's Director points to the partnership's roots: "Our partnership started more than 15 years ago. We were founding members, starting the project with around 200 farmers. Today, it has over 10,000 certified farmers." The Weaving Mill's Managing Director puts it in terms of who actually benefits: "Everyone, from the farmer who has grown the cotton to the last hand that stitched and packed the product, receives their fair share for the role they play. Each Boll & Branch product from our factory is enriched with the joy and dedication of every hand that contributes to its making. This is something that conventional facilities cannot replicate." At that mill alone, 83% of the factory floor workforce is women. Across the supply chain more broadly, 11,352 solar panels have been installed across the brand's 7 partner factories, a footprint that reflects investment in both the people and the physical infrastructure behind every Boll & Branch product.

A Commitment to Uncompromising Quality

Ethical sourcing and product quality aren't separate goals at Boll & Branch, they're the same goal. The President of the brand's third-party QA partner has seen that commitment reshape their own standards: "Boll and Branch has moved beyond the buzzwords by implementing procedures to become fully transparent. This commitment of maintaining a high moral compass has changed our internal vetting protocols. We've become more stringent, only working with factories who prioritize fair labor practices, safe working conditions, and human rights." The brand's product rejection rate sits between 0.03% and 0.06%, against an industry standard closer to 3%. At that level of consistency, 2,986,734 Fair Trade Certified products shipped to customers between 2014 and 2024, each one passing through the same inspection standards that keep the rejection rate this low.

Extending Our Impact: Circularity and Community Support

The brand's impact doesn't stop at the factory door. Boll & Branch has donated $1.9 million in goods to Good360 over ten years and contributed 527 lbs of fabric to FABSCRAP since 2022, diverting material that would otherwise go to waste. Helping From Home, the brand's community program launched in March 2020, has reached 4,300 homes, directed $150,000 to Habitat for Humanity, gifted 1,500 sheet sets to veterans, and donated 7,800 mattresses and pillows to hospitals and shelters during the pandemic. The throughline across all of it is the same: choices made upstream showing up as measurable support downstream.
